Jags Bolster the Line for 2013.
JagsJungle.com has learned that Mesa Community College offensive tackle David Griffin has given his verbal commitment to South Alabama.
Griffin is a big, athletic player from Tallahassee, FL with quick feet. His head coach, Ryan Felker, had glowing praise for his starting left tackle.
"He's a kid who comes to practice every day and works hard. At 6'7" and 315lb it's hard to imagine he doesn't fit in at that (FBS) level, especially with his motor and the intensity that he brings. He's an intense kid that works hard and is a good teammate. I think he deserves the opportunity to play at that level."
Griffin, whom Coach Felker described as a strong pass blocker, will compete at left tackle for South Alabama next year. He had this to say about his decision.
"It sounds like a good program. My teammate from last year, Tyrell Pearson (now starting at CB for USA), he plays for them and I heard he likes it a lot out there. I like the coaches and it sounds like a good deal."
Griffin chose South Alabama over an offer from FAU and also had interest from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Utah and USF. He will graduate in December and will enroll at USA in January.

Chaffin Talks Troy Game
We caught up with Jacob Chaffin to get his thoughts on his visit to South Alabama for their first ever Sun Belt Conference game with Troy.
Jags Jungle: Other than extremely wet, how was your visit for the Troy game?
Jacob Chaffin: I had a great time! The atmosphere was awesome. I had a great time rain or shine. I look forward to coming back soon.
JJ: Did you get a chance to talk with coach Jones or any of the other coaches?
JC: Yes sir, I talked to coach Jones, Coach (Bryant) Vincent, Coach (Bill) Clark, Coach (Brian) Turner, and the other DL coaches.
JJ: You made the rounds. Did you hang out with any other recruits?
JC: Yes sir, Roman Buchanan and Taylor Lamb. I know Devon Earl from Hoover was also there.
JJ: Did everyone seem to be enjoying it?
JC: Yes sir, we all had a great time. We're all ready to get down there.
JJ: What did the coaches have to say when you talked to them?
JC: They talked about how they’re ready for me to get down there. They talked about how South Alabama has a bright future.
JJ: Do you have an official set up yet?
JC: Yes sir, later on in the year.

JC: No, sir, just South. I'm ready to get to work with the DL coaches and grad assistants who recruited me.

McGill-Toolen OT Talks Recruiting
Jags Jungle had a chance to catch up with McGill-Toolen offensive tackle Harrison Louden tonight for the latest on his recruitment.
Jags Jungle: How's recruiting going right now?
Harrion Louden: It's going well. I just go an offer from Geogia State.
JJ: How many offers is that now?
HL: Seven - South Alabama, Louisiana Lafayette, Arkansas St., Louisiana Tech, Memphis, UAB and now Georgia State.
JJ: Who is recruiting you the hardest?
HL: It's probably a toss up between South and Arkansas St.
JJ: Will you be at the South Alabama Troy game this weekend?
HL: I was going and I was really looking forward to it, but I'm heading up to the Alabama / Ole Miss game instead. I'm planning to visit for a couple of South games this year.
JJ: Do you have any official visits set up yet?
HL: I've been talking to Arkansas St. about coming up for a visit. I almost did it this weekend, but it's such a long commute that I wouldn't get to see much of the campus or the town considering the travel and the time a game takes up. I'll probably visit them after the season.
JJ: McGill's off to an excellent start. What are your goals for the rest of the year?
HL: Just to get better everyday and do whatever I have to do to help my team win.
JJ: What have you improved the most from last season to this season?
HL: Probably just adding 30 pounds. I added good weight, got stronger and was able to keep my quickness. I think my feet are quicker, actually.
JJ: Do you have a time frame in mind regarding your recruiting or when you might commit?
HL: My coaches are telling me to be patient and more doors will open up, more offers will come in. I'm going to take my time and see what happens. I'm not the type to commit and then de-commit, so I want to make sure before I commit to someone.

Commitment Update 9/8
The second, or is some cases third, week of high school football has just concluded for most of the USA commitments. Here’s how they performed this week.
DB Tiquan Lang – His Lowndes(GA) team defeated Newton 31-0, holding them to 72 yards of offense, only nine in the second half. Lang opened the game with a sixty yard kickoff return to the Newton 18, leading to his team’s first touchdown. He was also involved in the second Lowndes TD when he recovered a fumble on the ensuing series.
DB Terrell Pinson – Itawamba CC defeated SW Mississippi CC 21-10 as they begin the season 2-0. Pinson had six tackles and a pass break up and also caught a pass for a two-point conversion.
RB Xavier Johnson – The occasional USA commit’s team did not play this week.
WR/TE Caleb Hayman - Hayman caught a 71-yard pass as the Gainesville Red Elephants upset Georgia high school superpower Buford 19-15.
WR Dejon Funderburk – Milton High School defeated Rutherford 31-3 as Funderburk contributed with an acrobatic 36-yard touchdown catch.
QB Taylor Lamb – Lamb accounted for four TD’s, including runs of one and 25 yards as Calhoun (GA) outlasted Dalton 56-41.
RB Justin Jones – In Week One, Jones rushed 18 times for 83 yards and a TD and caught three passes for 23 yards in NE Mississippi’s 33-14 loss to Copiah Lincoln CC. In the 9/8 against Jones County CC he rushed for 102 yards on 27 carries, returned a kick 21 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown.
S Roman Buchanan – Buchanan played RB and DB in a 27-10 win over region foe Montgomery Catholic.
WR Tevaris McCormick – Biloxi beat Long Beach 70-13 as McCormick contributed a 37 yard TD reception.
DT Jacob Chaffin - The Spain Park defense showed up big as they beat defending 6A champion Prattville 27-20.
S Devon Earl – Hoover beat rival Hueytown 45-6.
OT Noah Armstrong – Lawrence County lost 57-0 to powerful Hartselle, mustering only 77 yards of offense.
LB/S Brandon King – King caught two passes for 17 yards as he pulled double duty for Highland CC in a 36-12 loss to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
DE Willie Williams – Williams’ 4A Americus-Sumter team was stunned by Class 1A Dooly County 21-12.
DE Jalen Wells – Dublin fell to 0-2 with a 46-17 loss to Pierce County.
