2012 JC Defensive End Likes USA
Even though Signing Day was over two months ago, South Alabama is still looking for players to improve their 2012 roster. One such player is Pierce College's Devon McKinney. McKinney is a 6'3" 260lb defensive end who did not sign in February as he considered his options.
Despite leading his team in sacks as a freshman with five and as sophomore with four, McKinney may have been overlooked as the member of a junior college team that boasted many D1 prospects. On the defensive side alone the Brahmas will send players to USC, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Syracuse and other notable programs in the college football world.
While the crowd of top college prospects may have made the job of standing out a bit more difficult for the outstanding pass rusher, but he is used to challenges after making his way from the tough streets of Camden, New Jersey to the junior college in California. His hard work has finally paid off as he now has offers from South Alabama, New Mexico and Utah State and has recently attracted interest from SMU as well. McKinney has a pretty good idea of where he may end up.
"I was just down there, in Mobile, Alabama," he said. "They showed me a lot of love. The Jaguars are my best option right now. Football is really big in Alabama and I think that's the kind of atmosphere I need to be in."
When asked to describe himself as a player, McKinney paints a picture of a talented, motivated defender.
"I feel like I'm a great pass rusher," said McKinney. "When we have them in third and long, I'm always thinking sack, sack, sack. Gotta get the quarterback. I could see myself playing some outside linebacker....or I could play end if they move to the 4-3. I feel like I can stop the run also. I'm a balanced type of player. I work hard. Coming from New Jersey, especially Camden, it's rough. We're more hungry where I come from."
In this situation, McKinney will not sign a letter of intent but will enroll in classes at whichever school he chooses after his JC graduation and will be bound to the school once he attends his first class. With that in mind, he still has time to make his decision. Certianly the coaches at USA hope he walks on their field in August.
