FIU up 1-0 heading to the bottom of the second #SBCBB
Practice Report: 8/16
The offense as a whole ran through situational drills, with the 1’s and 2’s each getting a share of the playing field. Wide receivers Bryant Lavender and Cameron Broadnax each looked good today. Corey Besteda made a catch and then quickly broke away from defenders for a touchdown. Tight end Greg Hollinger also made a few very good catches. The offensive line also made strides in pass protection, the most impressive of the day being Drew Dearman.
The defense made several interceptions during individual drills and during 11-on-11 drills. Charles Watson, BJ Scott, EJ May, and Ben Giles each had an interception. Defensive back Tyrell Pearson got the defense and coaches excited when he barreled over tight end Rush Hendricks on his way to making a tackle.
Special teams continue to work on extending their kicking game. Michel Chapuseaux had several kicks that were longer than 45 yards.
The Jags will not hold practice again this week before their scrimmage on Saturday, which will be held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and is closed to the public.
Practice Report: 8/14
The Jags returned to practice on Tuesday morning with only 17 more days until their first game of the season.
The offense struggled throughout 11-on-11 drills. QB Ross Metheny had a few overthrows, and two near interceptions. CJ Bennett looked better controlling the offense. WR’s Bryant Lavender and Cameron Broadnax each had good days, both with diving catches during individual drills. TE Rush Hendricks even added in a diving catch that fired up the coaching staff.
The defense caused all kinds of problems during drills today. DL Will Thompson recovered a fumble for a touchdown after a running back lost it in a pile. DB’s Jonathan Cameron and Darrius Marrow each had a few pass breakups. LB Clifton Crews had a breakup as well.
Special teams worked on long snapping and long distance field goals. Many that were kicked were in the 48+ yard range.
Coach Jones was preaching consistency today, but the offense fell short of achieving that goal. Hopefully they can improve upon that tomorrow.
Practice Report: 8/13
On offense, CJ Bennett and Ross Metheny had a good day finding open receivers. WRs TJ Glover and Cameron Broadnax made impressive catches. Jereme Jones added a one handed touchdown catch to the mix. Running backs Brandon Ross and Kendall Houston looked good during individual drills. The offensive line also had a good day, only allowing two sacks during 11-on-11 drills.
The defense had a few hiccups, leaving open receivers during the pass skeleton. Safety Charles Harris broke up two passes to lead the defensive backs. Defensive linemen Lucas Melo and Montavious Williams showed off their strength on the sleds, with the two combining to nearly flip one over. Safety BJ Scott has been very vocal during practices, something that lacked in years past.
Special teams worked extensively on long snapping, an aspect of the special teams that has lacked so far during the fall camp.
The players were not worked too hard and given several breaks, which kept the tempo fast for the majority of practice. The Jags will continue practice tomorrow morning at 7:15am.
Practice Report: 8/9
On offense, the team worked primary on running routes during drills. Wide receivers were put in charge of getting away from defenders and in some cases, improvising a route on the fly. Wide receiver Nathan Sassaman burned the defender on an impromptu fly route for a touchdown. During 11-on-11 drills, CJ Bennett had trouble finding the offense, with the defense making at least three interceptions. Ross Metheny did not pass the ball much better, but he did however show great speed scrambling out of the pocket. Wide receiver Corey Besteda once again impressed at practice, making an amazing behind the back one handed catch that left everyone asking “How did he do that?” Jereme Jones also had a good day of practice, catching a deep touchdown pass from CJ Bennett.
The second half had running backs working on holding blocks on passing plays. Terrance Timmons was impressive blocking out of the backfield. After 11-on-11, the team moved to red zone passing. Wide receiver Bryant Lavender and tight end Greg Hollinger had good days, both making great jumping catches over defenders. The team also practiced the 2-minute drill for the first time. The 1’s, led by CJ Bennett, had their drive stopped at the 34 yard line after failing to convert on 4th down. The 2’s, led by Ross Metheny, made it down to the 26 yard line with 10 seconds left before they settled for a field goal.
The defense caused problems all morning. A string of three pass defenses in a row and an interception by a defensive lineman had the defense chanting “D-Block.” Linebacker Ben Giles made a few good plays in zones, while Enrique Williams plowed over running back Demetre Baker on a run up the middle. Defensive Back Eddy Cabrera broke up a few passes as while.
Kicker Michel Chapuseaux was kicking well in what appeared to be his first full day kicking the ball. He and Aleem Sunanon were hitting 45+ yard field goals with ease. Chapuseaux also made a 47 yard field goal on a hurry up play with 3 seconds remaining.
The Jags will have a final practice Friday before their first scrimmage of the fall season Saturday.
