Catching Up with Jag Commit Matt Bolger

Written by Gene Hansen. Posted in Uncategorised

I recently caught up with Bob Jones High School (Huntsville, Ala.) infielder Matt Bolger to discuss his commitment to the University of South Alabama. Aside from playing this summer with Excel Baseball Academy, Bolger was chosen to represent North Alabama during Alabama All-Star Sports Week.

Jags Jungle: What other schools were involved in your recruitment?
Matt Bolger: Troy was interested in me as well as UAB. There were some JUCOS and other schools, as well. I actually committed last December. It was very early. I just fell in love with South.

JJ: From what I understand, your an outstanding student. How did academics play a factor in your decision?
MB: Just the majors and departments South had available. And every building was practically brand new. The campus in general was awesome.

JJ: Have you decided on a major?
MB: Either one of the engineering or biomedical science.

JJ: You say you committed in December, who recruited you? Did South first see you during the school year or playing with Excel?
MB: Coach Zulli first saw me last summer on Excel. He came to watch (Cole) Billingsley, then started to recruit me more and more.

JJ: Do you feel playing with Excel has you better prepared for DI baseball?
MB: Absolutely. I give most all of the credit to the guys there. They’ve taught me so much about the game and helped me become the player I am now.

JJ: What are your goals for the upcoming year?
MB: Just to tear it up. Have a great season like I did this summer and just have fun playing an awesome game.

JJ: What are your strengths as a player, and what do you work at everyday to improve?
MB: My ability to hit to the opposite field with power is a big one, and I have a good glove. One of my biggest strengths is my leadership on the field. I think about a lot of situations before they happen which allows me to react when they do. I love talking on the field. And I put in hard work every day to improve all aspects of my game.

JJ: Thank you for your time. Congratulations on committing, and we're glad to have you on board.
MB: Thank you, I appreciate it. I can't wait. It’s going be awesome what we do.
