JAGS GET PLEDGE FROM TENNESSEE INFIELDER
The University of South Alabama Baseball Program has received a commitment from Germantown, Tennessee infielder Connor Hawthorne (6’1,185).The lefty hitting Hawthorne batted .402 with 4 homeruns last year as a junior for the Houston Highs School Mustangs.
We caught up with Connor to ask him a few questions about his pledge to USA.
Jags Jungle: What other schools were involved in your recruitment and why did you choose South Alabama?
Connor Hawthorne: Mississippi St., Arkansas St., MTSU, Memphis and Austin Peay. I felt like South Alabama was the best opportunity for me to get to the next level. I liked the coaching staff and I think the program is on the rise. I wanted to be a part of that.
JJ: How did South Alabama get involved?
CH: Coach Zulli recruited me. He first saw me play at a tournament in Alabama when my high school team played in it last year.
JJ: What are your strengths as a player and what do you work at the hardest?
CH: My strength is my hitting. I hit everyday and workout everyday to improve it.
JJ: What are your personal and team goals for the upcoming season?
CH: Win a state championship. Personally, I want to hit well above .400 with power and be a team leader.
Connor is playing this summer for Dulins Dodgers based in Cordova, Tennessee. It’s one of, if not the best club team in Tennessee and one of the best in the south. Matt Cain (Giants - this year’s NL All-Star starter), Drew Pomeranz (Rockies) , Zach Cozart (Reds), Logan Forsythe (Padres) and Julio Bourbon (Rangers) are among its alumni. Hawthorne figures to get his first look with the Jags on the left side of the infield, more than likely third base. He'll be a welcome addition to the infield.
